Jan. 10th, 2006 @ 11:33 am VM and Feminism lecture
Any VM fans out there in the Atlanta area? Apparently I'm not the only one interested in talking about Veronica Mars and feminism, and it's quite the hot topic.

In April the Popular Culture Association will be having its annual conference and, I kid you not, here is one of the lectures:

"We used to be friends": Third-Wave
Feminism and Veronica Mars
Tim Burke, University of South Florida

The conference is at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis and the VM lecture will be on Thursday, April 13. Scroll through the full Conference Program for more info. Buffy, BSG, even Desperate Housewives, you name it, it's all there. They give out Ph.Ds for this stuff? I should head back to graduate school for a Ph.D in Buffy and Veronica studies.

Dec. 19th, 2005 @ 07:08 pm VM and Feminism: Mutually Exclusive?
Is it possible to be a feminist and a fan of Veronica Mars? Some people don't think so, arguing that VM "was never 'empowerment.' She was daddy's little girl. That's what Veronica Mars still is." Seriously?

Thoughts on VM and feminism. Discussion of major plot points through 2.10. Comments and dissenting opinions welcome." (NO spoilers for future episodes beyond "One Angry Veronica.")

Oct. 19th, 2005 @ 03:15 pm After Episode Chat Tonight?
This week I will be having an after episode chat on mIRC. If you are familiar with mIRC we will be on Dalnet and the Dragons server, using channel #veronica_mars.

Why? People can come and go without an invite. I hopefully won't keep getting kicked off and if I do I can reconnect. Anyone can chat at any time we're always open.

Chat is for Eastern time zones but since we are on mIRC the channel never closes so Westcoasters are welcome to come in after the episode.

Now for the people going "mIRC?"
mIRC is a internet chat program using servers and channels. Here is the short form tutorial.
Download the mIRC chat program here or here
If you don't want to use the downloadable program there is an applet here Directions for the applet are below.
Now open and install the program. Ignore the purchase information.
fill in the information with whatever you want, including your nickname. On the left side under "connect" the next one under that is "servers". the IRC Network is DALnet, the IRC Server is DALnet:US, CA, Dragons. Now click "connect to server". The chat box will open and in the dialog box type /join #veronica_mars, hit enter and you will be taken to the chat.

Directions for applet.
On the right hand side there is a "Chat Now" with "Nickname" and it'll say for example "Guest40000" and "Go". Click "Go" and the chat applet will open shortly. In the dialog box at the bottom type /join #veronica_mars. that will bring you to the chat. When you enter the chat you will be known as Guest-with the numbers, use the /nick command (see below) to change it to your nickname.

Other mIRC things to know;
to change your nickname: /nick and the name you want to use, it will look like this /nick I_love_Veronica_Mars
to quit /quit and a message it will look like this /quit goodbye until next week or you can just leave.
to leave an away message: /away and the message, it will look like this /away phone call

Want to know more about mIRC here are a few tuts

Sep. 13th, 2005 @ 02:18 pm An introduction and request.
cadhla was kind enough to give me the go-ahead on this post, so thanks to her.

Most of you are here because you love Veronica Mars. Most of you are aware that VM, despite being wonderful, scraped into a second season. The challenge is to convince the good people at UPN that they made the right decision.

So I present involvedviewers for your perusal.

The basic premise is simple. Someone, usually me, will write down all the ads played during my local broadcast. Any ads with a suitable national following will be researched, and links to the relevant website will be displayed. In addition, someone (again, usually me) will track down the management contact for the product (this usually involves a nice trip through the corporate website to "investor relations" and a link to the head of marketing).

Then someone else, (hopefully, all of you), will use that contact information to write a letter or two. If there is a product in which you actually have some interest, then you would write to the company, thank the staff for its sponsorship, and express appreciation for the product. You then cc that letter to Dawn Ostroff and Rob Thomas. (I'll upload a sample letter by the weekend.)

I'd like to think that this is both novel and a clear indication that VM fans interact with advertising in a much stronger way than the average TV viewer. What network executive wouldn't want to hear that?

I'd really like to get people involved before the new season starts. Please consider helping out. Thanks for your time.

Aug. 26th, 2005 @ 09:25 pm Cupid - Episode 12
Episode 12:
Grand Delusions, written by Sy Dukane and Denise Moss

(This writing pair also wrote for Frasier, Roseanne, and Murphy Brown)

Transcript here. (I'm so glad--I find it so hard to write about these episodes without a transcript!)

Claire and Trevor meet a man who thinks he is Don Quixote (and Trevor Sancho Panza). Claire takes over the man's case and asks Trevor to help him break free of his delusion by convincing him that Trevor is not Sancho (thus making hte man realize he is not Don Quixote).Trevor tries to help but then becomes drawn to the prospect of united Don Quixote with his Dulcinea (a stripper). Meanwhile, Claire's father, a jazz musician, comes to town with talk of settling in Chicago for good.

This episode is about delusions and how people need them but learn to grow past them. I have never read Don Quixote, but Spark Notes and Wikipedia have helped me out a bit. I think it's clear that Trevor is Don Quixote. They both are delusional, but their delusions are not really harmful except to themselves. Both stumble along involving themselves in others' lives and problems. Both have a sidekick who tries to get them to see reason. Claire isn't quite the scapegoat of all Trevor's crazy plans the way Sancho is for Don Quixote, but there is some degree of similarity.

Trevor asks Claire an important question when they learn what really happened to Don Quixote (aka Robert Cunningham, who killed his wife in a drunk driving accident): Is delusion preferable to reality? Delusion helps shield Robert from the pain and guilt he feels.

But it's only a temporary measure. He can't really live like that. At some point he has to face reality, face the truth. What's interesting is that the moment he starts to show that he can break free of his delusion is the very moment that the possibility of new love is shown to him. The stripper, Mona Lovesong, tells Robert her real name and tells him that when he's better, maybe they could have a chance. It's love that gives him the impetus to become whole again.

The same theme underlies Claire's b-plot, involving her father. She's under a delusion about her father, that it would be best for him if he stayed in Chicago with her. She has to give up her dreams to make sure he is happy--because he's happier playing on the stage, travelling on the road, than he would be in Chicago working as a talent scout.

This was a sweet episode, and I enjoyed it, but it always makes me uncomfortable when the story leans more towards Trevor being mentally ill. I guess I feel the relationship between Claire and Trevor, while enjoyable, is unprofessional.

Any thoughts? Comments?

Aug. 20th, 2005 @ 08:42 pm Cupid Episode 10 and 11
I've really failed you Rat Slaves over the past few weeks. Sorry! Part of it is that Iwas busy earlier int he month, and part of it is that I really have a hard time analyzing a text if I don't have a transcript or script to help.

So I went to Google Groups to help. So excuse me if any of my thoughts are lifted from posts in rec.arts.tv or alt.tv.cupid.

Hung Jury - was written by Michael Green and Michael Conathan, but Hart Hanson and Rob Thomas worked on the story.

Trevor and Claire are ordered to be part of a jury ruling on some sort of computer fraud case. 11 out of the 12 jurors vote the defendant guilty, but Trevor votes not guilty. Claire thinks Trevor voted not guilty just because he doesn't want to be alone and because he sees another match he can make. In the end, the jurors acquit the defendant, who may be guilty.

But who cares?

I've seen this episode compared to Twelve Angry Men, but there's a little It Happened One Night in it. But I find this episode frsutrating and contrived, personally. There are great moments, and the way the artist character (played by Kim Fields) and the foreman of the jury end up together is cute. I also like the musical interludes (a street musician was also commandeered for the jury). But the story with Champ was so contrived. It was like, hey, everything has to be nice for Christmas. Let's just say I liked the ending of "An Echolls Family Christmas" better.

HJ/AEFC connection: When Champ takes a job as a Xmas Santa for the money. Trevor says Champ is the guy who puts the ho into ho ho ho. Logan makes a similar reference to Veronica in AEFC.

Episode 11 - A Great Personality
Written by Rob Thomas

This is a one-concept episode with a few variations, including the ever popular "inversion" version. Do people seeking relationships privilege outer appearance over the inner person? Yvonne (a beautiful woman now married to Ben Stiller), wants men who value the inner her, not her outer beauty. She has devised a series of tests to test the men who date her. With Trevor's help, she puts in a personal ad to find someone who might value the real her. She meets Ken, a guy who is not great looking but who makes her laugh and to whom she can really talk. They're falling in love... but then her old boyfriend comes back into her life and she reunites with him. Claire is also trying to figure out Trevor's real identity, the guys from the single group start going to a bar that mostly serves models and other beautiful people, and Champ is having second thoughts about his relationship with Chris.

We have another line that RT plagiarized from himself. Trevor asks Yvonne if "cartoon birds help [her] get dressed," a line almost repeated in Like a Virgin.

The ending is sad. You're expecting Yvonne to realize that Ken is the guy for her, but as far as we see, she doesn't. She's made the choice of beaty over personality, and she's worse off for it, but not changing herself.

I was also sad for Mike (one of the singles group guys), who chose personality over beauty (he found himself drawn to the waitress rather than the beautiful patrons of the hip bar)--only to find that someone smarter got there first. Annette already had a boyfriend.

Please--any feedback or additional thoughts would be most welcome.
